On this day, Ariel Sharon was born in Kfar Malal. The Israel Ministry of Defense records that he was born on February 26, 1928, and gives his family name as Scheinermann. The Knesset records that he joined the Haganah at 14. He died in January 2014.
He was wounded at Latrun in 1948 while serving in the Alexandroni Brigade. He later commanded Unit 101 and the Paratroopers Brigade, and rose to major general. He was prime minister from March 2001 until April 2006.
