On this day, Arieh “Arik” Einstein was born in Tel Aviv. He became a pioneer of Israeli rock, blending folk and popular song. The Associated Press records that he began performing in the early 1960s after serving in a military entertainment troupe.
The New York Times records that he died in Tel Aviv on November 26, 2013, at 74, of an aortic aneurysm. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called his songs the soundtrack of the nation.
