On this day, Bar-Ilan University opened in Ramat Gan. American Mizrachi leaders, including Pinkhos Churgin, had formed the plan for a university combining Torah study and general scholarship around 1950.

Named for Rabbi Meir Bar-Ilan, the school opened with a small first class in temporary buildings. Churgin served as founding president.
