On this day, Foreign Secretary Ernest Bevin told the House of Commons that Britain would submit the problem of Palestine to the United Nations. He said the government could not award the country to the Arabs or the Jews, or partition it, under the Mandate. Britain would place an account of its administration before the United Nations and ask for a recommended settlement. It would not itself recommend a particular solution.

Bevin said the Mandate had proved unworkable and that the obligations to the two communities had been shown to be irreconcilable. He expected the question to wait for the regular General Assembly session that September.
