On this day, the Irgun and Lehi attacked the village of Deir Yassin, west of Jerusalem. The fighting killed villagers, including people who were not fighters. The attack is remembered as the Deir Yassin massacre.

The Jewish Virtual Library records that about 100 Arabs were killed, against an early published figure of about 250. It cites a Bir Zeit University study that counted 107 civilians and 13 fighters, and a 2017 study by Eliezer Tauber that counted 101 dead. The counts do not agree.
