On this day, at the White House, Anwar Sadat and Menachem Begin signed the Treaty of Peace between the Arab Republic of Egypt and the State of Israel. Jimmy Carter witnessed. The treaty followed Sadat’s November 1977 visit to Jerusalem and the 1978 Camp David Accords. Egypt and Israel established diplomatic relations. Israel agreed to withdraw from the Sinai.

Sadat and Begin had received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1978. Sadat was assassinated in October 1981.
