On the evening of 9 December 2000, Prime Minister Ehud Barak said on television that he would resign and lead Labor into a special election for prime minister. CNN reported that he would tell President Moshe Katsav the next morning and then submit the letter the law required. He said the election would come within 60 days and that the government would stay in office until a new one was formed.
