On this day, Eleazar Lipa Sukenik was born in Białystok, then in the Russian Empire. Britannica, which spells his given name Eliezer, records the birth as 12 August 1889 and his death in Jerusalem on 28 February 1953.

He became an archaeologist at the Hebrew University. He directed the clearing of Jerusalem’s Third Wall from 1925 to 1927 and published the mosaic of the Beth Alpha synagogue in 1932. He was the first scholar to identify the Dead Sea Scrolls as ancient, and he acquired three of the first scrolls for the Hebrew University.
