On this day, Theodor Herzl’s pamphlet Der Judenstaat (The Jewish State) was published. Herzl, covering the Dreyfus affair as a Viennese journalist, argued that Jews needed a recognized state, and discussed Palestine and Argentina as possible territories. Alfred Dreyfus was a French army captain.
