On this day, President Paul von Hindenburg appointed Adolf Hitler chancellor of a coalition cabinet. Franz von Papen became vice-chancellor. Non-Nazi ministers were included in the hope of containing Hitler.

In the July 1932 Reichstag election the Nazi Party had won 230 seats, the largest bloc. It lost ground in November. After Kurt von Schleicher’s chancellorship failed, conservative brokers returned to Hitler. Once in office he moved quickly against political opponents.
