On this day, Jan Karski died in Washington at age 86. Born Jan Kozielewski in Łódź in 1914 and raised Catholic, he served the Polish underground as a courier after Germany invaded Poland. Jewish underground leaders took him into the Warsaw ghetto twice. He later briefed the Polish government-in-exile and Allied officials on the destruction of Polish Jewry.
On 28 July 1943 he met President Franklin D. Roosevelt in Washington. Yad Vashem recognized Karski as Righteous Among the Nations in 1982. He taught at Georgetown University for decades. This article dates his death, not the 1943 briefing.
