On this day, July 22, 1878, Henryk Goldszmit, later Janusz Korczak, was born in Warsaw. He directed an orphanage and was deported with the children to Treblinka in 1942.

On this day, Henryk Goldszmit was born in Warsaw. He wrote as Janusz Korczak, trained as a physician, and directed the Dom Sierot orphanage for Jewish children. He also wrote children’s books and radio talks on the rights of the child.

In 1940 the orphanage was forced into the Warsaw ghetto. On 5 August 1942 Korczak went with the children to the Umschlagplatz and was deported to Treblinka, where they were murdered.
