On this day, at Luxembourg, Konrad Adenauer and Moshe Sharett signed the agreement later registered as United Nations Treaty Series No. 2137. West Germany undertook payments to Israel for the cost of resettling Jewish refugees and a further sum to the Conference on Jewish Material Claims Against Germany.

The treaty entered into force on 27 March 1953 after ratification. Menachem Begin led public protests against acceptance.
