On this day, physicians in Tel Aviv led by Meshulam Levontin founded the Society for Fast Help During a Disaster, the organization that became Magen David Adom.
The 1929 riots had shown how little first-aid capacity existed. Jerusalem and Haifa branches followed. In 1950 the Knesset made Magen David Adom Israel’s national emergency medical service.
