German forces had entered Kyiv on 19 September 1941. After explosions destroyed buildings used by the occupiers, notices ordered Jews to assemble on 29 September. Sonderkommando 4a of Einsatzgruppe C, with Police Regiment South units and auxiliaries, marched those who appeared to the Babi Yar ravine and shot them.

Operational Situation Report No. 106 recorded 33,771 Jews murdered on 29–30 September. Kyiv had been occupied on 19 September. Later killings at the same ravine are a separate story. This article dates the two-day September massacre.
