In July 1940, Max Bodenheimer died in Jerusalem at the age of 75. The Jewish Telegraphic Agency reported his funeral on July 22 and said he had died the day before that report, after a short illness at Shaare Zedek Hospital. Other reference works place the death on July 19 or July 20.

He was born in Stuttgart. In 1898 he went with Theodor Herzl to Constantinople and to Palestine. On his 75th birthday that March, Tel Aviv made him an honorary citizen. Menachem Ussishkin of the Jewish National Fund spoke at the funeral.
