On this day, Mordechai Bentov was born in Grodzisk Mazowiecki, then in the Russian Empire. Encyclopaedia Judaica records that he immigrated in 1920 and lived at Kibbutz Mishmar HaEmek. He was a leader of Hashomer Hatzair and a Mapam minister.
He was part of the Jewish delegation to the 1939 London conference on Palestine. In the provisional government he was minister of labor and reconstruction, and he signed the Declaration of Independence. He represented Mapam in the Knesset from 1949 to 1965 and died in 1985 at Mishmar HaEmek.
