Natan Alterman was born in Warsaw in 1910. The Jewish Virtual Library records that he moved to Tel Aviv in 1925, studied at the Herzliya Gymnasium, and later translated Shakespeare, Molière, and Racine into Hebrew.

In 1968 he received the Israel Prize for Hebrew literature. He died in 1970.
