On this day, Nathan Straus was born in Otterberg, in Bavaria. The Library of Congress dates his birth to 31 January 1848 and his death to 11 January 1931, in New York.

He came to the United States in 1854. With his brother Isidor he became a partner in R. H. Macy & Co. and in Abraham & Straus. He and his wife, Lina, paid for pasteurized-milk stations in New York. Isidor and Ida Straus died on the Titanic in 1912. The city of Netanya, founded in 1927, was named for him.
