On this day, Rehavam Ze'evi was murdered in Jerusalem. The Knesset records that on the morning of 17 October 2001 two assassins from the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine killed him at the entrance to his hotel room. He was minister of tourism.

A day and a half earlier, he had submitted his resignation from the government.
