On this day, a suicide bomber blew up a No. 2 Egged bus in Jerusalem's Shmuel HaNavi neighborhood. The Jewish Virtual Library records that the bomber detonated a five-kilogram device packed with ball bearings, that 23 people were killed and more than 130 were wounded, and that Hamas claimed responsibility. Many of the passengers were returning from the Western Wall.

A New York Times report filed that day put the death toll at least 18. The library records that on 1 September 2003 the cabinet froze the diplomatic process with the Palestinian Authority.
