On this day, Simon Wiesenthal died at his home in Vienna at age 96. Born in 1908 in Buczacz, Galicia, he survived a succession of camps and was liberated at Mauthausen in 1945. After the war he collected evidence on fugitive Nazi criminals from a documentation center in Austria.

He supplied information used in several prosecutions, including work connected to Karl Silberbauer and Franz Stangl. He did not capture Adolf Eichmann. This article dates his death, not those earlier cases.
