On this day, soldiers of the Soviet 60th Army entered Auschwitz I and Auschwitz II-Birkenau. About 7,000 prisoners remained. Most others had been forced on death marches in the preceding days.

The United Nations later designated 27 January as International Holocaust Remembrance Day.
