On this day, the first convention of Ahdut HaAvoda, meeting at Kinneret Farm, resolved to establish a defense organization. Bar-Ilan University records the date as 15 June 1920. The Haganah became the main defense force of the Jewish community in Palestine and the core of the later Israel Defense Forces.
The decision followed the riots of 1920, including the battle at Tel Hai, when local defense groups were judged too small for a national force.
