On this day, about 6,000 supporters of the Israeli Black Panthers gathered in a central square in Jerusalem. The Center for Israel Education records that they were protesting social and economic discrimination against Mizrahi Jews, and that police and protesters clashed.

The same account records Prime Minister Golda Meir’s remark that they were “not nice boys.”
