On this day, Theodor Herzl was born in Pest, then part of the Habsburg Empire. He became a journalist in Vienna. Covering the Dreyfus affair as a correspondent, he argued in the 1896 pamphlet Der Judenstaat that Jews needed a recognized state.
In August 1897 he convened the First Zionist Congress in Basel. He died in 1904. His remains were reburied in Jerusalem in 1949.
