On this day, a fire at the Triangle Waist Company in New York killed 146 people. Cornell’s ILR School records that it started near closing time on Saturday, 25 March 1911, on the top floors of the Asch Building, and that 146 of about 500 employees died.

Many of the dead were young Italian and Jewish immigrant women. The fire led New York to rewrite its factory laws.
