On this day, Solomon Schechter, then president of the Jewish Theological Seminary, convened representatives of 22 synagogues in New York and founded the United Synagogue of America.

The federation later became the United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism. Schechter called it the greatest bequest he would leave to American Jewry. He died in 1915; the organization continued.
