On this day, German SS and police units began the Grossaktion in the Warsaw ghetto. Under the cover of “resettlement in the East,” they forced Jews to the Umschlagplatz for trains toward Treblinka. USHMM records that about 265,000 Jews were deported to Treblinka between 22 July and 21 September 1942, and that about 35,000 were killed inside the ghetto during the operation.

Adam Czerniaków, head of the Warsaw Judenrat, died by suicide the next day. The 1943 uprising is a separate story. This article dates the opening of the 1942 deportations, not that later rising.
