Yoel Palgi was born in 1918 in Cluj, then in Austria-Hungary and now in Romania. His birth name was Emil Nussbacher. The Library of Congress records the birth year as 1918 and the death year as 1978, without a day.

In 1939 he emigrated to Mandatory Palestine and joined Kibbutz Afikim. He served in the Palmach and was dropped into Yugoslavia during the Second World War to help Jews in Hungary. He later became deputy director of El Al and Israel’s ambassador to Tanzania.
