On this day, Zvi Hirsch Kalischer was born in Lissa (Leszno), in the Prussian province of Posen. He studied with Jacob of Lissa and Akiva Eger and later served as unpaid acting rabbi in Thorn (Toruń).

In Seeking Zion (1862) he argued that redemption would begin by human effort and that Jews should settle the Land of Israel. In 1864 he helped found a settlement committee in Berlin. His agricultural-school idea contributed to the opening of Mikveh Israel in 1870. He died in Thorn on 16 October 1874.
