Ibrahim Pasha and his army marched into Hebron and destroyed the Jewish community. This marked what would be known as the Hebron Massacre of July, 1834. (Ibrahim pictured on 2nd image)

At the time, Muslims around Israel rose up in rebellion against Ibrahim Pasha of Egypt and his new law that people living in Ottoman-occupied Palestine could be conscripted into the Egyptian Army. This rebellion has been called the Peasant Revolt as it was the common people all over the Land who stood up against it. During these rebellions violence was directed against Jews, Christians, and the Egyptian army.

Around this time, Ibrahim Pasha sent the Egyptian Army to Hebron to stop the rebellion. After hours of fighting in the streets, the army gained control of the city.

They then proceeded to attack the Jews of the city specifically. They entered the Jewish Quarter and spent hours pillaging the area. They ransacked homes, stole valuables, burned synagogues and Torah scrolls, killed twelve Jews – seven men and five girls – and raped many women.

After the attack, the Jews were desolate and traumatized. The Ashkenazic and Sephardic communities joined together (for the first time) to try to rebuild their homes and their communities. Finally, 24 years later in 1858, the Jewish community of Hebron had fully recovered.
