#onthisday, 1977, third President of Egypt and the first Arab statesman to visit Israel, Anwar Sadat, address the Knesset (Israeli Parliament).

.

In what was a monumental first step to achieving diplomatic peace between Israel and Egypt, there remains to this day much work to do to establish a sense of true peace and coexistence between the two nations.

While Sadat focused some of his speech on addressing the Palestinian question, Begin and the Israeli side made sure that the rest of the process following Sadat’s visit was focused on achieving relations between Egypt and Israel first, dealing with the Palestinians later.
