Netanyahu is also the Chairman of the Likud party. He is the longest-serving Prime Minister in Israeli history and the first to be born in Israel after the establishment of the state.

In 1963, his father and historian, Benzion Netanyahu, moved with his family to Philadelphia.

After enlisting in the IDF in 1967, he became a soldier in the elite special operations unit, Sayeret Matkal, and was on the team that rescued a hijacked jet plane at the Tel Aviv airport in 1972.

Netanyahu later studied at MIT while taking time off to fight in the Yom Kippur War in 1973.

After his brother Jonathan died while leading the successful Entebbe raid in 1976, Netanyahu founded the Jonathan Institute, which sponsored conferences on curbing terrorism.

Netanyahu held several ambassadorship positions before being elected to the Knesset as a Likud member in 1988.

He served as deputy minister of foreign affairs and then as a deputy minister in Prime Minister Yitzhak Shamir’s coalition cabinet.

In 1993 he won the election as the Chairman of the Likud party, succeeding Shamir in that post. Netanyahu became noted for his opposition to the 1993 Israel-PLO peace accords and Israeli withdrawals from parts of the West Bank and Gaza Strip.

Netanyahu has been the Prime Minister since 2009 as the longest serving leader in Israeli history. Currently, he is serving in a coalition government with Benny Gantz as Defense Minister and Alternate Prime Minister.

Since 2017, Netanyahu has been investigated and indicted on multiple cases of corruption and inappropriate favors (Case 1000 and 2000). The coronavirus pandemic has slowed the process of court trials. As of the release of this post, Netanyahu’s criminal trial is still pending.
