#onthisday, 1920, Amador Bendayan is born. The son of Morrocan Jewish immigrants to Venezuela, Bendayan would go on to become one of the most known TV personalities in Venezuela and Latin America.

Kickstarting his career in radio in 1937, as an announcer and comedian, Bendayan would get his “big break” doing comedy work on “El Bachiller y Bartolo” and “La Bodega de la Esquina”. Then, he worked for some years hosting, “The Amador News”, a satirical TV-news parody.

His career continued to grow when the shows switched to television, spending some time making films in both Mexico and Venezuela. His nickname soon took hold: El Pequeño Gigante de America / America’s Small Giant.

Amador spent the end of his career working with Radio Caracas Television and on Venezuela’s largest TV channel, Venevision.

The proud son of Morrocan Jewish immigrants, Amador always kept his Jewish heritage at the forefront.

A Venezuela of another time, the country was an attractive haven for Morrocan Jews before and after WW2 – opening its doors and providing the necessary freedoms for the community to flourish, particularly in the 70’s.

This suitable environment allowed for the success and popularity of Bendayan’s career as a whole.
