#onthisday, 1939, Yehoshua Sobol – award winning Israeli playwright, writer, and director is born. Happy Birthday Yehoshua!

.

Sobol was born in Tel Mond, located east of Netanya and just north of Kfar Saba.

.

His parents fled Europe in 1934 from Poland with the Nazi rise to power.

.

He has won awards internationally on a variety of topics from the Holocaust to the life of Alma Mahler-Werfel.

.

Sobol’s first play came out in 1971 in Haifa and by the early 80’s was being invited to participate in international festivals like the one in Edinburgh. By 1989, he had completed three related plays focusing on the Jewish experience in the Vilna Ghetto – “Ghetto”, “Adam” and “Underground.”

.

“Ghetto” won immediate awards and was quickly translated and performed in more than 20 languages and over 25 countries

.

Since 1995, Sobol has been working closely with Viennese director Paulus Manker on multiple projects and experimental forms of theatrical experiences.

.

In one play, “Alma”, the scenes of the subject’s life, (Alma Mahler-Werfel) were performed simultaneously on multiple floors and rooms. This unique form of performance turns the viewer into a traveller of the theatrical journey as opposed to a mere spectator.

.

Additionally, his son Yahli Sobol is a member of the famous Israeli rock band, Monica Sex, as one of the guitarists and vocalists.

.

We wish Yehoshua Sobol a very happy birthday and continued success in all future projects.
