As the sun sets on Kislev 25, 5781, Jews all over the world will light the first of 8 candles to celebrate the holiday of Channukah. This festival of lights is a celebration of the miracle of light that occurred when a small band of Jews fought for their freedom and rededicated the Holy Temple in Jerusalem.
Channukah is a time to feel the awe of gratitude for being Jewish, for being able to light the candles that so many could not, and to focus on teaching the next generation about the importance of spreading the light of the menorah and Judaism. Every year, Channukah reminds us that just like our ancestors fought back against the threat to our lives and our way of life, we continue that fight today – and just like they succeeded, so will we.
Channukah is a time for joy and celebration, as well as reflection and introspection. It is a reminder that even in the darkest of times, there is always hope and light to be found.
As we light the candles each night, we remember the miracle of light and the fight for Jewish freedom. We celebrate the courage and determination of our ancestors, and we commit ourselves to continuing their legacy.
