#onthisdaywe wish a happy birthday to iconic comedian, actor, and writer, @andysamberg who turns a young 42 years old.

Born into a Jewish family in Berkeley, California, Samberg stumbled across Saturday Night Live being broadcasted on his family’s television at an early age. This ‘by chance’ moment impacted his life more than he realized.

Saturday Night Live jumpstarted Andy’s infatuation for the art of comedy. In his high school years, Andy discovered a passion for creative writing. Samberg was able to combine his love for comedy and creative writing following his graduation in 2000 from NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts.

With two of his close friends – Jorma Taccone and Akiva Schaffer – the comedy troupe, “The Lonely Island”, was born. Their early comedic work skyrocketed thanks to the newly formed video platform: YouTube.

Samberg and the Lonely Island’s main shtick consisted of composing short pop/rap songs with ironic, unexpected lyrics and a high chance of viral-ability. Always able to find a way to surprise and give a sense of absurd twists – the trio quickly became a cult classic.

.

The group created a website featuring their work and attracting the attention of SNL – landing the trio as a part of the weekly show in their digital shorts. Now, they’re independently hilarious and can be found @thelonelyisland.

Outside SNL, some of Samberg’s notable acting roles include the “Hotel Transylvania” franchise, “Cuckoo”, “That’s My Boy”, and the popular TV series, “Brooklyn Nine-Nine”.

His on-screen work was so well received that Andy has won a Primetime Emmy, a Golden Globe, Best Comedy Actor in the American Comedy Awards, and the Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series award in Entertainment Weekly’s Poppy Awards.
